Deuteronomy talks of seven fruits the land of Canaan: wheat, barley, grape vines, fig trees, pomegranates, olive trees, and date honey. I looked this up because of my experience with pomegranate juice. Our supermarket carries one litre bottles for 17.49 NIS, about $4.40, a little less expensive than Harris-Teeter, but that is where the comparison stops. This juice is sweeter, absent the bitter bite that encourages me to add a portion of orange or any other available juice when drinking our usual store brand. The taste is also richer and more complex, making it a sensuous experience, not a medicinal one, taken for its anti-oxidants and other properties. Perhaps the richness of this juice is one reason that the top, one of those twist-off plastic caps with perforations, is impossible to twist off. In fact, it’s impossible to force it off in any way, short of taking our serrated paring knife to cut through the perforation. I am curious to try some other brands, both for the taste and the top.
