Anyone who has ridden in an elevator with toddlers knows the joy that they experience, when you pick them up to let them push the buttons for the floors. The train in Israel uses an electronic ticket, similar to the one on the DC Metro, but without multiple uses. You put the ticket in the slot, the machine reads it, allows the turnstile to turn, and then spits out the ticket from an exit slot. Today at the Bet Yehoshua station, a mother picked up her toddler so that he could reach the slot to insert her ticket. It took several tries, but the slot took the ticket, they scurried through the turnstile, and then she held him to retrieve the ticket from the exit slot. Given his smiles and laughter, he’ll be riding the train himself in no time.
