Tel Aviv was founded 100 years ago, as a suburb of neighboring Yaffo. Over the years it has grown into a thriving, vibrant, colorful metropolis, Israel’s largest city, a truly international city, at the center of Israel’s dynamic economy. Although there was a formal declaration on Thursday on Rothschild for dignitaries, tonight was the opening bash. Hundreds of thousands gathered on Rabin Square for a 90 minute light show, fireworks and concert with current pop stars and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Zubin Mehta. This opening gala was about Tel Aviv, the city, not about the State of Israel or the history of the Jewish people. Each of the 5-10 minute segments told a part of Tel Aviv’s history in music and lights to an enthusiastic crowd of elder elders to infants in strollers and packs. What a proud, joyful, and affirmative way to launch this year long celebration.
